Portrait Session

This was done over 2 sessions, 6 hours, using charcoal, charcoal pencils, and conte crayon.  “Academic Drawing” short course at the Corcoran School in DC.

This is the first portrait I’ve ever done.

Technique was to rub the paper with charcoal and then smear the charcoal with paper towel, wiping away excess charcoal dust.  Once the paper was saturated with charcoal dust, draw the contour, fill in the shading and blend, and then use the kneaded eraser to remove charcoal from areas where there were highlights.
